HVAC Capacitors 101
There are two basic types of motor capacitors most commonly used in HVAC. The run capacitor and the start capacitor. Motor capacitors are used to either increase run efficiency of the motor or to give it an initial joult to jump start the motor. They are sometimes referred to as motor starter capacitors or power capacitors. Motor capacitors are only used for single-phase motors that generally see heavy use throughout the HVAC industry. Typical applications... [Read More...]
How to Check a Capacitor
Remove the start capacitor and use a screwdriver to shorten the two terminals and discharge the electricity from it. Set your analog meter on 1k ohms. Touch the two terminals with your ohms meter test leads. Reverse the way that you were touching the two terminals with your ohms meter test leads. The needle in your meter should swing to 0 ohms and swing back to infinity every time that you reverse the ohms meter test lead on the start capacitor. If... [Read More...]
